A landscape of objects - fragile and imperfect, trembling, unstable and strange. Objects designed for special activities that perhaps resemble gardening, building scarecrows in the field or walking the dogs, but certainly not in the usual way. Scaled by a dislocated plant, strangely moving, rustling and subtly asking for the viewer's attention and participation. A nest of oddities, an oasis of peace and contemplation.
For the Theatre Festival REGIONS, the artists create an autonomous world of kinetic objects that respond in different ways to the festival's theme, literally and poetically exploring qualities such as trembling, impermanence, fluidity, balance and the resulting balancing, shaking and bustling. They reflect the observation of purely natural phenomena, processes and transformations (such as the seeding of plants, fluttering of leaves, waving of grass, swaying of grain stalks) alongside human labour in the landscape, in the garden and field and its care (such as settling, farming, cultivating, weeding, building bird frightening devices in the garden, scarecrows in the field, cleaning ponds, grafting trees, raking leaves). Individual objects react to their surroundings and are transformed or moved by the action of the elements. Subtly, quietly and conspiratorially, they invite viewers and passers-by to play, to interact, to encounter more deeply, to dialogue and to discover. From time to time, we visit these objects embedded in the environment to comb the Stalks, summon the Ghosts and Scarecrows, cleanse the Hives and Dovecotes, or walk out the Creatures. After work, we might have a tea party with a Bark Beetle and chew carelessly on the Stalks.
"Hustle and Bustle is a performative installation that invites you to visit an unusual garden where you can discover and experience various forms of trembling, fluidity and balance together with the three artists. You can help them care for this wondrous garden or just stop for a moment to enjoy its fruits. Whether you are a child or an adult, accept the authors' invitation to play together. And at the same time, look carefully around you whenever you walk through the city. You may see one of the authors walking some strange creature. Don't worry, you're in no danger from any of these pets. But if you want to pet one, you'd better ask its human companion first."
Stalks They are swaying in the wind, high above our heads, noiselessly, in their own rhythm. Bark Beatle A wobbly surface that invites the viewer to play and physically engage. Is it a question of finding a balance or upsetting it? Ghosts and scarecrows Haunting, scaring, driving away. Genius loci scurrying between the ears, expanding beyond the field. Hives and Dovecotes Isles of our strange garden scattered around the city. Hiding within them layers, telling secrets. What will you discover in them? Creatures Strange ungainly creatures of wood and junk dwell under/among the Stalks. But they can appear anywhere when out and about.
The Hustle and Bustle project is realized as part of the second year of residency projects specifically for the International Theatre Festival REGIONS and is produced in collaboration with Nová Síť and the ART-IN-RES program.
